Congratulations to our 16 Girls for taking the win in the NSW State Cup! 🏆
Coaches Recap:
U16G State Cup. We only had 7 players for the tournament.
1st game was a good win over Norths Bears 61-43. A little disjointed but showed some good teamwork.
2nd game was much tougher against Sutherland Sharks. They had 2 of the top 5 scorers for the tournament and were both big and fast. Nail-biter coming down to the last play of the game but we earned the win, 67-66. We are a fastbreak team but our team rebounding was an issue. We weren't taking boards so couldn't get out on the break as much as we usually do.
The next morning we faced Port Macquarie. We had to win to get into GF. Another big side who again out rebounded us but the girls put on a wonderful defensive display to get the win 66-54.
GF was against Leeton Eagles. Had not seen them before or had the chance to scout them. But they were big! Before the game the girls committed to each other to scrap for every board so we could get our fastbreak working. First few minutes were neck and neck. They seemed to have an answer for the defences we threw at them. Then, from about the 5 min mark the girls hit the go button. Started boxing out and grabbing boards which allowed our guards to get out on the wings and run. Everything was going right with every player contributing on the scoreboard. If one player was locked down another would step up to take up the slack. They were reading and reacting to everything Leeton did defensively. Got their bigs in foul trouble early and then just ran away with the game 89 - 43. The real difference was their commitment to rebounding. Probably pulled in around 20 more boards than in previous games and we were off in our sideline break.
One of the best team oriented games I have ever seen and so gutsy with only 7 players who had already had played ACT JPL games on Thursday and Friday night prior to the weekend tournament.
Coco Duggan was named MVP!
Well done Roadrunners! 🏆
